about the artist

artist statement

Art making is ritual to me.

My work dwells in the exchange between nature and culture. In the ineffable space between inside and outside, the visible and the invisible, the physical and the spiritual.

What can be described as dream, and what is waking?

What are the threads that weave through our lives that connect us to place, to one another?

I express these relationships and connections sometimes using a camera or paint, other times using found materials and images ~ abandoned books, donated fabrics, gold leaf, river water and walnut ink.

In Robert Bly’s words, “Ritual creates a second flow of events ~ and we enter that stream or not, as we wish. The idea of ritual is strange to our ears; it say that if something is healed in the other world, something is healed in this world also…”
